The Finer Details That Complete Your Extension or Renovation

Period Extensions & Designs have renovated and extended many Victorian, Edwardian, Federation, Californian Bungalow,  Art Deco and contemporary homes.  From these many projects we have  curated some of the finer details to inspire your decisions when it comes to fixtures  and fittings for your own home.

The Finer Details That Add Finesse to Your Home

What separates a truly flawless extension from one that looks “tacked on” is the quality of the finishes. The cornice profile, the architraves, the tapware, and the style of the windows and doors should compliment the existing character and design of the home.

Whether you’re extending a Victorian terrace in Fitzroy, restoring a Californian Bungalow in Glen Iris, or extending  the rear of an Edwardian home in Camberwell, the finer details are what ultimately add the  wow-factor to the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is probably the most common question we hear, and the answer is genuinely: it depends on the home and your vision for your extension or renovation. A contemporary contrast,  where the new addition is clearly distinct from the old, can work harmoniously when it’s designed  with intention and built with precision.

Heritage overlays exist to protect the architectural features of a property and areas of cultural significance. Period Extensions & Designs work within these heritage guidelines to extend and renovate properties to modernise them whilst preserving their heritage character. Primarily, heritage overlays aim to safeguard the façade of the home, the front fence, the roofline visible from the street, and significant trees on the property.

Our Interior Design Team will assist with selections  for all your fittings and fixtures, tile choices, and paint colors early on in the project. Our finer details gallery will provide inspiration with assisting you in your choices.

There is nothing to say that you cannot blend different elements from different eras. It is your home, and the choices should complement your lifestyle without creating visual confusion.

It is difficult to put a timeframe on a renovation or extension without context. Planning and design alone can vary significantly, especially on heritage-overlaid properties where council approvals are needed. Construction timelines depend heavily on the scope of the work and the condition of the existing home.
