That is precisely what Period Extensions & Designs was recognised for in 2018 when we were named a finalist in two categories at the prestigious HIA Victorian Housing Awards.

The awards celebrate excellence in residential construction across Victoria, recognising projects that demonstrate outstanding design, quality workmanship and innovation. 

Finalist: Renovation & Addition Project ($800,001–$1 Million)

This extension and renovation project, crafted by Period Extensions & Designs, was named as a finalist in the Renovation/Addition Project ($800,001 to $1 million) category. Over the years, the original property had fallen into serious decline; finishes had aged, walls had been damaged, floors had worn, and interiors were no longer suitable for modern living. The renovation was about breathing new life into the home while preserving the timeless character that is the hallmark of period architecture.

The transformation included new timber flooring throughout the home, refined staircase detailing and carefully selected contemporary fixtures that complement the classic design language of the property. Soft lighting and understated finishes created a balanced interior aesthetic: elegance and comfort.

Much of the project was to improve the functionality of the home with a well-designed extension, improving space, flow and natural light. The open-plan living spaces now seamlessly flow together, creating a layout more in keeping with the way modern families live whilst still respecting the original architectural charm.

The success of the project is in its ability to blend modern living requirements with heritage-inspired design in a home that is sophisticated yet authentic.

Finalist: Renovation & Addition Project ($400,001–$600,000)

This major renovation has transformed a neglected property into a bright, welcoming and highly functional family home. Period features were blended with subtle mid-century influences, especially in the hallway and staircase areas, where timber detailing added warmth and texture.

The home’s architecture was defined by a redesigned staircase, while the new open-plan kitchen and living spaces created a more seamless connection between spaces. The large windows allow natural light to stream in, and also make the home feel bright and welcoming. This home was designed to reflect how a sensitive renovation can retain the character of an older property while bringing it up to contemporary standards of living.

A Recognition of Craftsmanship and Architectural Sensitivity

Renovating period-style homes requires a special approach. Every extension, finish and structural improvement should work in harmony with the existing architecture. That balance takes more than construction knowledge; it takes an understanding of proportion, of heritage detailing, and of long-term liveability.
