Camberwell Project
The Brief
This project involved the considered extension and reconfiguration of a heritage dwelling to support the evolving needs of a multigenerational family, while being sympathetic to council heritage requirements.
The original home, though rich in character, had become tired and no longer functioned for contemporary family living. Existing spaces were small, enclosed and lacked the flexibility required to support modern patterns of work, rest and play. The proposed design sought to respectfully retain the home’s heritage presence, while introducing a generous and highly functional extension and renovation that enhances liveability and connection.
The extension opens the home outward, pushing beyond the constraints of the original footprint to create expansive, light-filled spaces that support a growing family. Internally, the layout was reimagined to improve flow and usability. A shared ensuite was introduced for the children, promoting both efficiency and practicality and an abundance of natural light, while the master suite was transformed into a private retreat featuring a luxurious ensuite and a generous walk-in robe.
A key feature of the design is the inclusion of a multipurpose room, providing long-term flexibility for the family. This adaptable space can function as a study, theatre area, rumpus room or guest accommodation, ensuring the home can evolve alongside its occupants.
At the basement level, a dedicated retreat was created for the grandparents, offering independence and comfort. This space includes a lounge and bar area, doubling as an inviting entertainment zone that encourages connection across generations. The existing basement study was also reconfigured to improve functionality and usability, complemented by the introduction of additional storage throughout the home.
The kitchen was reimagined as the heart of the home, featuring refined, high-end finishes and an adjoining open working pantry. This allows multiple users to occupy the space simultaneously without interruption, supporting both everyday living and entertaining.
Externally, the home was carefully revitalised to honour its heritage character while restoring its presence. The roof tiles were replaced and the façade refreshed with a new coat of paint, breathing new life into the dwelling and elevating its street appeal. This subtle renewal ensures the home feels both timeless and renewed.
Thermal performance was a critical consideration. The original home suffered from poor comfort levels, being cold in winter and hot in summer. This was addressed through the integration of a comprehensive heating and cooling system, upgraded insulation and the sealing of air leaks, significantly improving energy efficiency and year-round comfort.
The result is a cohesive and highly functional home that honours its heritage origins while embracing contemporary living. It is now a space that supports connection, independence and flexibility, one that the family is deeply proud of and genuinely enjoys sharing with others.
