Camberwell Project

When Jane and Kenny contacted us to renovate their home, we were delighted; as this project was pretty much right next door to our office. Jane & Kenny’s brief was simple:

“Please keep the front 3 rooms then create a Kitchen/Dining/ Living area that is filled with light and with a layout that flows well. We would like an ensuite and bathroom that both have windows (not skylights) and we don’t mind if the laundry is European in style. We plan to live here for a long time and would like to raise a family in this home as we love the location. ”

Imagining their life together, and currently studying, incorporating natural light was the highest priority within the design. There was space to build a further 10 meters plus 25% as there was an existing wall. We were able to site the extension along the southern boundary thus maximising the northern aspect as well. We did have to rake in the ceiling, but the style of the house is traditional and seamlessly blends the old with the new. Wainscoting and parquetry flooring helped achieve this conventional look and feel. However the materials are not. The mother of pearl tiles in the kitchen and ensuite were not designed for it, so they had to be fixed to boards and then be put in position. The tapware was dipped giving it a gold glow, thus resulting in a warm, light home.
